The big news of the moment amongst App developers, is the surprise announcement by Apple that they are relaxing some key restrictions on how Apps can be made. Ignoring the Adobe vs Apple squabbles for a moment, there was another group of developers who were being caught in the fallout. The smallprint of the Apple restrictions, also restricted this sort of App.

While I wait for a decent Android tablet to ship (be it iPod touch or iPad sized), I’ll instead post here about the just released info on the iPhone 4 and its OS (iOS4). Well because in my state alone there are many many schools using the iPod touch to enhance learning. The update will at least be free for iPod touches now!

Every year at this time, Apple has used the opening of its World Wide Developers Conference to preview what the next version of the iPhone and iPad operating system will bring. While there is nothing quite on the level of AirPlay mirroring which we got last year, these are worth knowing about and planning for. I’ll also touch on something that might be a concern. Apple has just announced the iPod Touch, which is just like a slightly thinner iPhone. It has the same touch screen, the same apps, the same Touch OS X operating system, WiFi and a Safari browser. Apple haven't opened the OS up for us developers to write but without the phone.

No updated iPod touch, and seemingly no price drop either to compensate. Just reading thru some of the details about the announcements overnight – now 500,000 apps – oops, I mean 500,000 potential learning resources. I’ve been thinking what’s in it for educators – not much this time. But there is an emerging way of controlling hardware, and by extension, interacting with information that has come to maturity in the last couple of years, and that is touch, direct contact between our natural selection devices (fingers) and the machines we are using. So, is learning and the institutions who’s job it is to propagate it ready to embrace a touch-computing future? I’d like to think so. What I love about the potential of simplified, touch-based interfaces I hope to see is that they open up computing to everyone. Welcome to 2010.

Recently Newsweek featured their solution in an article Apple's New Weapon. I had seen demos as well, but had not done a thorough review. In talking with Vcom3D a couple weeks ago, the CEO offered to send me a loaner iPod Touch unit with their learning modules to review. It arrived this week and I expected to just unpack an iPod Touch. It was quite heavy.
