Embracing Mobile To Educate For Tomorrow | MobileBehavior

mlearnopedia delicious

Mobile Behavior: an Omnicom Group Company Home People Blog Work Events Press About Us May 12, 2010 by Caleb Embracing Mobile To Educate For Tomorrow The classroom was traditionally a controlled environment; when wireless technology began to invade, skewing the rules of time and space, teachers panicked. What better solution than to ban cellphones altogether? But while mobile phones have been blamed for an increase in exam cheating , SMS has been praised for helping students learn to spell. The solution lies in perspective. At St. Marys City School in Ohio , mobile phones are embraced, not banished from being used in the classroom. It is one of many educational systems that are beginning to think differently about in-class mobile behavior. Schools are slowly beginning to realize that the future lies in mobile communication and utility; instead of building resistance, they are opting to design curricula supporting it, preparing todays youth for a designed tomorrow. Scott Newcomb, a St. Marys fourth grade teacher expresses his support. We have been using smartphones in the classroom. Every student in our school district from 3rd grade to 6th grade has their own mobile learning device! We will be adding seventh grade next year. Our goal is to have a mobile learning device in every student’s hand from 3rd grade to 12th grade! Next year, we will have over 900 mobile learning devices in our school district! Taking a closer look at the schools lesson plans , we see a variety of use cases for mobile devices in the classroom. Mobile Pair Share encourages wireless collaboration through storytelling. Give the students a “story starter”; for example, “It was a dark and stormy night…” Then have the students start typing their story. Have the students type for ten minutes. When the time is up, have the students “beam” their story to a partner, and have their partner finish the story. Cameraphones are put to use during Math Geometry Hunt to find and capture a variety of geometric figures to then report back to class. Other examples found in the lesson plan include students using the built-in compass, navigating maps, and using the device as an everyday storage device. A classroom without walls may mean that digital notes are being passed around, but the problem lies not in the technology, rather it is found in the way we think about it. When collaborative systems are designed and built around preexisting behavior, in-class participation and engagement sky rockets. As weve written in the past , this can be seen in the success of tools like Purdues Hotseat , where students submit and vote on questions to be answered in class. With cellphonometry , even the generally low scoring students are becoming highly participatory. Embracing mobile technology is a smart move for todays educators; were observing this become realized. Alongside St. Marys, many in higher education are jumping on board; Columbia Universitys Teacher College sees cell phones as the next great learning tool. Abilene Christian University gave out 2,000 iPhones and iPod Touches to its students and teachers, urging them to "go mobile, go digital." Even from an early age, we see 2-year olds using Fisher Price iPhone apps and iXL mobile learning devices. The list goes on , including our five approaches to mobile technology in the classroom. For the generations of tomorrow, absence of mobile technology would seem abstract. From the cradle, they will have learned to communicate, fulfill tasks, obtain knowledge, and navigate the world all through mobile computing. "Cellphones" are now "mobile devices," their evolution brought them from being a simple social tool to a powerful digital Swiss Army knife. Youth will not know of Microsoft DOS, Windows 3.1, or 56k modems; todays youngest will not consider the iPhone 3GS to be extraordinary. The building blocks for tomorrows technology do not matter to them, only what is and will have been possible for them. Lets educate accordingly.
