Podcasts Shown to be Potentially More Effective than Classroom Lectures

Well, this study from the State University of New York at Fredonia (my undergraduate Alma Mater) provides some evidence for the effectiveness for at least one form of m-Learning - podcasts. “The results showed that the podcast viewers did considerably better than those who attended the lecture in person. The podcast group averaged nine points (out of 100) higher on the test than those in the live audience. Podcasts would never have been podcasts without the pod.

To support the argument – that informal learning is important – here is a research by Prof Robert Kelley from Carnegie Mellon University, which shows dramatic drop over the years in the percentage of information that the workers need to hold in their heads to get their work done. These are video podcasts and focus on real situations. My students love making podcasts in the classroom and my Grade 3 are calling these podcasts Gigglecasts as they really like to tell jokes. To this end, my idea is to repurpose a windscreen GPS-type mount for holding a variety of gadgets in place around a learning area, especially for viewing podcasts or playing and replaying voice recordings etc. This one that I found (simply called a ‘universal car windshield mount’) has three rotating sections and I’ve been able to angle it pretty much anyway I’d want for devices in both a portrait and landscape mode.

In a study by Coventry University, Mrs Beverly Plester and Dr Clare Wood took 11 year olds and asked them to translate from text to English and vice versa, then put them through standards tests in spelling, reading and writing.
