I mentioned before in one of my posts about the growing use of smart phones application as a form of Just-in-Time performance support; as mentioned before ; I feel eventually technology will enable individuals and not just companies/departments to deliver applications. To support the argument – that informal learning is important – here is a research by Prof Robert Kelley from Carnegie Mellon University, which shows dramatic drop over the years in the percentage of information that the workers need to hold in their heads to get their work done. You can at best support it by providing an environment, which helps informal learning happen.

The study was very insightful, and the findings support the notion that m-Learning is currently best consumed in the form of performance support material. However, this study does point to mobile performance support, delivering context relevant content quickly and efficiently as a major enabler for productivity. employees used mobile information “for two main purposes: in-field performance support from colleagues and access to late-breaking information”. Employees did not find the mobile courseware to be particularly helpful. It was $10 to download.
