The statistics come from Ambient Insight’s US Market for Mobile Learning Products and Services 2008-2013 (Executive Summary). We spend a lot of our time creating content for very small, targeted populations of learners in comparison to the general population who download apps from app stores. I don’t think we will abandon our current model in favor of app stores, but I see a role for app stores in our future. In the future, educational and training institutions like Harvard Business Publishing may create their own app stores for mobile learning.

Last week I went to another seminar, or rather a presentation about the future of the mobile web in 2010. A few interesting products (hardware and software), some of which I have never heard of, were shown. According to Schärer and Wieser, some of the mega trends of 2010 are the more increased use of social networks on mobile phones, location-based services and augmented reality. He posted about a new service called eduFire where educators can focus on teaching, and students can sign up for inexpensive courses on a wide variety of topics. I was reading Chris Dawson’s post on zdnet and it got me thinking. The topics at eduFire are only limited by the subjects that people are willing to teach about. Basically, if you want to teach a topic, you teach that topic and you decide how much to charge for that course. Even though you may be relaxing with friends, you may want to learn how to cook a turkey or the intracacies of hybrid car.
