Reflections on the 2008 RCAC Symposium

The Mobile Learner

I was fortunate enough to attend another education technology conference in 2008 and this conference was the Western RCAC symposium held in London, Ontario on December 11th.  When we buy a new TV, we are shopping for the creative experiences presented by visual artists - kids are doing the same thing when they are shopping for video games. Video games are changing the nature of learning but this industry will also drive an increased need in story writers, artists, musicians, etc - we should not shortchange the arts in our funding and in our instructional focus.

Cell Phones in Learning

I created this video for my presentation at the MACUL conference tomorrow in Grand Rapids, MI. Update: Here is the Link to video on TeacherTube.Enjoy would love some feedback on it. The goal is to give a perspective of educational history and technology, where common technology tools (such as a chalkboard or pen or even Internet) were once banned and labeled "harmful" as we are doing with cell phones. Enjoy!

With the academic year coming up, quick videos that capture the imagination of learners and at the same time give a quick impression of relevant topics are in high demand. Create Cell Phone "I search" video papers with Twiddeo

Cell Phones in Learning

I was listening to Ed Talk (01_14) recently and they (John, Jennifer, Dave, and Jeff) spoke about a new resource called Twiddeo , which is just Twitter with video. You can post videos from your computer, but you can also post immediately from your cell phone to your personal account. This allows for many "out-of-school" learning assignments with cell phones and video. The first idea that came to my head was conducting an "I search" video paper. Of course students would need to get verbal permissions to post any person in their video. And the result.so And fun!

But, as Bill Tancer showed in his 2008 book  Click , the number of people visiting porn sites has gone down as the use of social media has gone up. The other example is from The Black Eyed Peas who have released an app for the iPhone that includes an immersive 360 degree, augmented reality music video that puts you in the middle of a party, dancing to the music.

Social Studies! Next Assignment.send a video message to presidential candidates cell phones!

After reading about this opportunity on PicturePhoning , I thought this would be a great assignment for any social studies class studying current events, following the 2008 election campaigns. Students could research an issue of their own interest (such as stem cell research, the best way to get out of the current "recession", healthcare, global warming.etc), and send a video message through Mogreet the Vote to any of the presidential candidates personal cell phones. It might be a fun and engaging homework assignment

Ted talk: Sugata Mitra on how kids taught themselves to use a computer

Ignatia Webs

Last year I had the honour of hearing Sugata Mitra speak in the Online Educa Berlin conference, I wrote a blogpost about his keynote speech and also on his debate on learning with Andrew Keen in which Sugata Mitra clearly argumented in favour of informal learning. Really motivating. If you do not know TED.com movies yet, surf straight to it. It is a collection of speeches given by inspiring people.

The multimedia file can be actual video or a PowerPoint-type stack that contains audio and automatic slide changes or similar functionality. understand the BB does not have a Flash driver, yet, but that might be optimal, if it is in the works. The critical factor is that our Attorneys do not have to open up a separate application on the BB and drill down to play a file and that the file includes audio and visual information (slides or video). Thoughts on Interactive Gaming

The Mobile Learner

Back in October of 2008, my wife and I bought a Nintendo Wii.  When, in the past, have you ever seen kids embracing music of their parents generation?  In a strange sense, video games appear to be changing the way kids are relating to content 0f the past.  However, some recent experiences and discussions merit some consideration here. iPhone users, this is for you!

Everything from Writepad to Facebook to video games are included on this site. I am not an iPhone user. The reason is because I like to use cell phones that the majority of students and teachers have, which are more basic cell phones. As that changes, I will purchase an iPhone or something similar, but until then I will be in the trenches with the students.
